Getting Involved
How would you like to join our group of volunteers and help make our next show as good as our last, and have a great time doing it? There are so many roles required to put the show together that we are sure that your skills can be used, or you can try to expand your capabilities. Age is no barrier. Our shows have had people from 7 to 72 lending a hand.

Preproduction

Bookings
- You will be attached to your nominated phone as people make bookings, change bookings, cancel bookings, and then probably do it all over again as they get their groups together or have to adjust their social lives.
- It can be particularly busy during the actual performance period.
- Tickets are also prepared for picking up from the Box Office 30 minutes before the performance.
have your phone run hot for the three weeks before and all during the play, while you take the bookings for each performance

Costumes
- Select the shapes, colours and textures to make an immediate and powerful visual statement to the audience.
- Ensure the audiences is given information about a character's occupation, social status, gender, age, sense of style and tendencies towards conformity or individualism.
- Include any accessories such as canes, hats, gloves, shoes, jewellery or masks that distinguish one character from another.
- Read the script and research the fashions of that period.
- Stimulate the flow of ideas at the first meeting with the director and the design team by presenting a few rough costume sketches.
- Draw up the costume plot which is a list or chart that shows which characters appear in each scene, what they are wearing and their overall movement throughout the play.
- Identify any potential costume challenges, such as very quick changes between scenes.

Director
- The director collaborates with a team of creative individuals and other staff, coordinating research, stagecraft, costume design, props, lighting design, acting, set design and sound design for the production. In contemporary theatre, the director is generally the primary visionary, making decisions on the artistic concept and interpretation of the text and its staging. Their role is to:
- Oversee and orchestrate the mounting of a theatre production by unifying various endeavours and aspects of production.
- Ensure the quality and completeness of the production
- Lead the creative team into realising The Director's artistic vision
The leader of the team creating his or her artistic vision of the play.

Poster Designer
- Liaise with the director to determine the theme of the play.
- Design the poster to reflect this theme.
- Liaise with the publisher / printer.

Production Designer
- reading scripts to identify factors indicating a particular visual style.
- meeting the producer and director to discuss concepts and production requirements.
- producing design ideas for sets, costumes, wigs, props, special effects, make-up, and graphics.
- liaising with the set constructor, costume designer, director, props manager, lighting and sound directors.
responsible for the overall look of a play.

Program Designer
- Liaise with the director to determine the theme of the play.
- Design the program to reflect this theme.
- Organise photos of the cast and crew.
- Collate all details for the program including cast, crew and sponsors.
- Liaise with the publisher / printer.

Properties
- Research and acquire props required for whole play.
- Liaise closely with actors and Director regarding above.
- Responsible for organisation of backstage crew.
- Ensure props and/or furniture changes happen accurately during each performance.
research and acquire props for each production in liaison with the Director and actors during the rehearsal period. Be part of the backstage crew at the theatre during the Production to manage use of props and monitor continuity.

- Liaise with Director and Set designer re the vision for the set.

Backstage:

Backstage Crew
- Communicate with Stage Manager through headset
- Change props or furniture on stage between scene/acts
- Call actors on stage

Hair and Makeup
- Design the hair styles and makeup liasing with the Director and the Costume Designer
- Prepare the actors for the stage
- Assist with costume changes
- Attend some rehearsals

Lighting
- Read the script carefully and make notes on changes in place and time between scenes - such changes are often done just with lighting to avoid too many blackouts in one scene
- Hold meetings (called Design or Production Meetings) with the Director, Designers, Stage Manager and production manager during the pre-production period to discuss ideas for the show and establish budget and scheduling details.
- Attend several later rehearsals to observe the way the actors are being directed to use the stage area ('blocking') during different scenes, and receive updates from the stage manager on any changes that occur.
- Create an accurate plan of the theatre's lighting positions and a list of their equipment, as well the set design.
- Manage the lighting effects during each production.

Sound Designer/Technician
- Study the script and gather information about any sound or music required.
- Hold an early meeting with the director and the design team to get a clear understanding of the production concept.
- Sit in on rehearsals to assist with developing effects and music to fit the specific contexts in which they will be used.
- Gather and create the necessary sounds.
- Sounds and music in the theatre can
- motivate actions onstage and indicate events taking place offstage
- establish the time of day, season and weather
- locate the action in a specific place
- create mood and changes in mood
- stimulate audience expectations of what is to come
- provide information about the characters
- build transitions between scenes
- offer shortcuts that rapidly advance the plot or recall past events
Plan and provide the sound effects in the play

Stage Manager
- Provide practical and organisational support to the director, actors, designers, stage crew and technicians throughout the production process.
- During rehearsals, work with the director, and record the blocking and notes for the actors, and keep track of logistical and scheduling details.
- Determine the scheduling of all rehearsals and make sure everyone involved is notified of rehearsal times, meetings, costume/wig fittings and coaching sessions
- During the rehearsal phase, stage managers also
- mark out the dimensions of the set on the floor of the rehearsal hall
- make sure rehearsal props and furnishings are available for the actors
- notify the designers and crafts people of changes made in rehearsal
- record all blocking, plus all the light, sound and set change cues, in a master copy of the script called the prompt book.
- work out an efficient plan of set changes for the stage crew.
- run technical rehearsals
- Stage managers have several key responsibilities and tasks to perform in each phase of a production, including
- communicating the director's wishes to designers and crafts people
- coordinating the work of the stage crew
- calling cues and possibly actors' entrances during performance
- overseeing the entire show each time it is performed
provides practical and organisational support to the director, actors, designers, stage crew and technicians throughout the production process.
Make sure that every aspect of the production runs just as the director intended time after time, until the production closes
Front of House

Box office
- Welcome people as they arrive to collect their tickets.
- Assist in the preparation of Tickets which are collected from the Box Office 30 minutes before the performance.
- Welcome people as they arrive to collect their tickets.
- Be at the Box Office 30 minutes before the performance to collect money and hand out tickets.
- Sell tickets for walk in patrons - when it is not a sellout.
- Count the takings to assist the Treasurer

Front of House Manager
- Has detailed knowledge of the theatre layout, its exits and the location of all safety equipment.
- Recruit the FOH Team for Program, Raffle, Usher, Canteen and Box Office.
- Purchase the required stock and raffle prizes.
- Ensure the venue is correctly prepared prior to the doors opening.
- Liaise with Box Office to determine audience numbers (tables and personnel required).
- Liaise with Stage Manager during the run.
- Distribute cash floats for FOH sellers.
- Brief FOH personnel on duties.
- Monitor FOH activities to ensure patrons are seated in a timely manner.
- Ensure the main foyer is manned at all times to take care of late arrivals and provide security.

Program Seller
- Collect the programs and float before the performance.
- Encourage patrons to purchase a program as they enter the theatre.
- Try out your selling skills to see how many you can sell.
make sure all patrons have the opportunity to find out about the show by encouraging them to purchase a program

Raffle Seller
- Organise prizes.
- Collect the raffle tickets, prizes and float before the performance.
- Encourage patrons to purchase raffle tickets as they enter the theatre.
- Visit patrons during the interval to sell more purchase raffle tickets and chat with the patrons.
- Try out your selling skills to see how many you can sell.

Sherry
- Help our patrons enjoy a glass of our complimentary sherry
- Collect and wash the sherry glasses during interval.

Usher
- Check the theatre layout before the patrons arrive.
- Usher patrons to their seats - both to the seats upstairs and the tables downstairs .
- Ensure all patrons are seated before the performance starts.
- Ensure patrons know about the sherry, programs and raffles.
